Have you noticed your reed diffusers evaporating faster in summer?
Reeds draw fragrance oil from the bottle upwards. Once the oil reaches the reed, it slowly evaporates into the air, releasing fragrance into your space. In summer months, this process speeds up.
Fortunately, we know a few small adjustments that can make your reed diffuser last all summer.
Tip 1: Keep your reed diffuser out of direct sunlight
A sunny windowsill might look like the perfect spot for a reed diffuser.
But direct sunlight is the fastest way to evaporate the liquid. Sunlight warms both the fragrance oil and the glass bottle. The warmer the oil gets, the faster it travels through the reeds and into the air.
Instead: Place your reed diffuser somewhere bright but out of the sun. A coffee table, bookshelf or sideboard. Our reed diffusers are designed to be centrepieces!
Tip 2: Avoid placing your reed diffuser near fans and air conditioning
Fans, air-conditioning units and open windows constantly draw scented air away from the reeds.
Yes, this does help spread the fragrance around the room, but it also forces the reeds to release more fragrance oil to replace what's been carried away.
Instead: Keep your reed diffuser away from strong air currents. Which part of your home has the least airflow? If you need to turn your fan or AC on, make sure you pop your reed diffuser out of the way to help it last all summer.
Tip 3: Use fewer reeds during summer
We’ve got a secret. Not every reed needs to be used straight away.
More reeds = more evaporation. With more reeds, there's more surface area for scent release and more liquid being sucked up from the bottle.
Instead: Start with three or four reeds rather than the full bundle. If you'd prefer a stronger scent, you can always add another reed until you find the perfect balance for your space.
Tip 4: Flip your reeds less frequently
You’ve probably heard conflicting information on reed flipping…
Flipping your reeds is the quickest way to boost fragrance release. Turning them over exposes saturated reeds to the air, creating an instant boost of scent.
However, every flip also exposes more fragrance oil to the air.
Instead: Flip reeds once a month during the summer. Or, try flipping just a few reeds instead.
Tip 5: Choose the right spot for your reed diffuser
Cooler, shaded rooms are ideal because they experience fewer temperature fluctuations than conservatories or south-facing rooms. For a stronger scent throw, place your diffuser in a smaller room.
We’ve found the most ideal places to make a reed diffuser last all summer are:

- Home offices
